Clinical Somatics Treatment for Scoliosis

in Albuquerque, NM

Many cases of idiopathic scoliosis are caused by tight muscles pulling the spine out of alignment. Slow, gentle Clinical Somatics exercises work with the nervous system to release the chronic, involuntary muscle contraction that causes spinal curvature. Clinical Somatics sessions are focused on your individual habitual patterns and areas of chronic muscular tension, and you will learn movements that you can do at home to alleviate your scoliosis on a daily basis.

What causes Idiopathic Scoliosis?

Approximately 80% of scoliosis cases are classified as idiopathic, which means that the cause of the spinal curvature is unknown. Many cases of idiopathic scoliosis are caused by chronic muscular contraction pulling the spine out of alignment.

This involuntary contraction of the muscles along the spine can result from injury, chronic pain, emotional stress, repetitive activities, and even handedness. When we have a protective reaction to an injury, or if we repeat certain postures or movements over and over, our nervous system learns to keep certain muscles tight, and we lose the ability to voluntarily relax them.

A spinal curve caused by tight muscles pulling the spine out of alignment is a functional issue; it is caused by the way the nervous system is functioning. Attempting to improve a functional spinal curve by using manual force is most often ineffective. Using a brace or spinal fusion to force the spine into alignment has little to no effect on the messages that the nervous system is sending to the muscles to contract.

Clinical Somatics Treatment for Scoliosis

The most effective treatment for most people with idiopathic scoliosis is active, conscious movement that gently releases the muscular contraction that is pulling their spine out of alignment.

Clinical Somatic Education is unique in that uses a highly effective movement technique called pandiculation. Pandiculation retrains the nervous system to release involuntary muscular contraction and bring muscles back into voluntary control.

Clinical Somatics also works with proprioception, which is how you sense your body in space. Proprioception is typically altered in people with scoliosis. Your sessions will include proprioceptive exercises which teach you how to accurately sense your standing posture.

Clinical Somatics exercises are initially taught in hands-on private sessions, then practiced at home on a daily basis so that you can continue making progress on your own. The exercises are slow, gentle and relaxing.

People who use Clinical Somatics exercises to release the chronic muscular contraction that is causing their curvature typically experience a gradual straightening of their spine as well as reduction or elimination of their scoliosis-related pain. For most people, idiopathic scoliosis does not have to be a life sentence. Years of pain and psychological suffering can be prevented with early, constructive intervention.

What to Expect in Your Sessions

Clinical Somatics sessions are gentle and comfortable. You do not need to be physically fit or aerobically active. You will be actively participating in the sessions, consciously engaging in slow, simple movements. Sessions are hands-on, so I will be touching you to help guide you through the movements.

Please wear comfortable clothing to allow free movement; clothing with some stretch is best. No shorts, skirts, or jeans, please. Please wear or bring socks. You will remain fully clothed during the sessions. Expect to remove shoes, jewelry, watches, belts, and pocket items. Your session will last 75-90 minutes.

Session Package Pricing for Scoliosis Treatment

In order to get maximum benefit from the process, I strongly recommend that all clients with scoliosis do a minimum of five sessions. The cost of a five-session package is $375 plus tax. After completing your initial five sessions, you may continue with single sessions at that same discounted rate of $75/session. Credit cards and cash are accepted at your appointment.
